conway's history in piano, jazz, & improvisation. |
|
Chris
Conway taught himself the piano as a child. Early influences were Tom
Coster, Chick Corea, then Steve Kuhn & Richie Beirach before getting
into avant garde realms in his college days, inspired by Howard Riley
and Kieth Tippett.
After University he then formed bands - a trio Solaris, then another trio Happy Landings
which later became the Chris Conway quartet, which was inspired by the ECM label artists
like Arild Andersen's groups, Bobo Stenson, Rainer Bruninghaus etc.
A collection from these years was gatheriojed together and released on
his Breathtaking CD. The 3 Happy
Landings trio albums have been remastered and relased on CD and
download.
All through this time he was blending his jazz in east-west fusion groups, The Rain Garden and Jazz
Orient/Re-Orient and others. These slowly became the main outlet
for his jazz music as his focus turned to songwriting. With Jazz Orient/Re-Orient he played twice at the Southbank and played with many of the best jazz and world music musicians.
Perhaps due to his increasing piano bar sets, he returned to jazz, though
often as a jazz singer and songwriter inspired by the interest in his
jazz songwriting shown by Brazilian singer Ithamara Koorax. He released
jazz song albums Deja Blue, and Minute of the Hour. In 2008 he released Chocolate Bossa - an album of jazz bossas featuring
Brazilians Ithamara Koorax and Thiago DeMello as guests.
He has also kept up an interest in improvised music which can feature
jazz elements in an electronic setting,
often featuring his theremin.
In 2010 he
released Glisten - an album of solo piano improvisations. In 2012 he released a reunion album with Re-Orient - "Undiscovered Time". In 2012 he released an album of atmospheric jazz Retracing My Steps. In 2014 he released an album of improvised pieces with 15 female vocalists Through Mirrors We Met which was the culmination of a year's work.
2015 sees him release an album with jazz singer Jodi Krangle and an album of solo piano improvisations, Midnight Window Blue.
In 2016 Chris released Outside In an album of a single 50 minute piano improvisation with sounds from outside the studio. 3 more solo piano albums followed. In 2022, he released When Pianos Dream features the piano with ambient sounds, electric piano & theremin.
