Govannen return to the studio for and album of of traditional and original songs and traditional tunes with detailed arrangements
|
background
Three years on from The Endless Road, Govannen went into the studio to record their 9th album. This time they returned to Chris Conway's Aloft Studio where they recorded their instrumental albums for Paradise Music.
The Endless Road was mostly recorded live in the studio. The plan this time was to have songs and tunes format like on The Endless Road, but with a touch of the production sound of
the Paradise Music albums - somewhere between the two.
Recording took place over the winter and spring of 2018
- Chris & Dan brought in an original song each, and Roger brought an arrangement of a traditional song. The rest of the songs and tunes are traditional.

1. As I Roved Out
We used to play this song way back when we were starting out and recorded it as a trio on Live 2006 - The Water Is Wide, but we stopped playing it for a long time. Recently the band persuaded Dan to revive it.
2. Merrily Kissed The Quaker - Blarney Pilgrim
We recorded these tunes before on the Celtic Earth but that is no longer available on CD and we still play it a lot so we thought we'd record a new version.
3.The Water Is Wide
Chris has sung this Irish ballad many times but has gone all out to make a really lush arrangement and production for this album.
4. Junior Creehans
Another set of tunes we recorded on Celtic Earth (under the alternate name The Knotted Chord - Corney Is Coming) we fancied recording a new version of for a CD still available for us to sell.
5. The Beggar
Roger brought this song to the band which has lyrics from the early 18th century and a refrain which goes back to a song in a play Gammer Gurton's Needle in 1575. Roger has added a couple of verses of his own.
6. Drops Of Brandy - Foxhunters
Govannen play these tunes at ceilidhs when Neil calls the dance Strip The Willow. The dance can go on for a while and over the years we have devealoped arrangements with sung harmonies and we jam a little around it. It's great to finally record it.
7. Inishbiggle
Dan wrote this song about Inishbiggle
(Inis Bigil in Gaelic) which is a small inhabited island off the coast of Ballycroy in Co. Mayo. Its name in Irish means "Vigil Island. The song is followed by traditional tune Connaughtman's Rambles.
8. Jazz Potato
Chris wrote this fun jazz/Celtic song about being a jazz piano player in an Irish band - an idea sugested to him by Dan. The song then goes into traditional jig The Lilting Banshee.
9.The Well Below The Valley
Dan has wanted to record this song for a long time after hearing the band Planxty's version.
10.Tripping Upstairs - The Blackthorn Stick
More tunes we play in our ceilidhs and barn dances.
11. Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore
A classic Irish song that really suits the Govannen sound.
12. The Strayaway Child
Dan has been playing the mandolin more and more at Govannen concerts and we thought it was time for a mandolin feature with this traditional tune.
13. The Blarney Stone
Roger foudn this Irish song and it's a great pub singalong feel to it.
14. The Close Of An Irish Day
In all of Govanen's albums fiddle player Adele has never been recorded singing a song
before - until now! And what a wonderful voice she has been hiding from us! A lovely dreamy way to end the album,
